Aamari Resort in Ramgarh

The Independence Day weekend was ahead of us, and given our lethargy to plan a trip at the outset, our group of procrastinators decided to make last minute arrangements for a quickie to the hills. As luck would have it, not a single hotel had three rooms to spare. Given our desperation, we would have been happy to drive down pretty much anywhere so we kept our options open. We chanced upon Aamari Hotels finally, only a 45 minute drive from Nainital, deciding to park ourselves in it’s beauty for the next 2 days to come. I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate independence than to breathe in the fresh air and surround ourselves with the mountains, the lake and good company.

Resort:

Aamari is a touch modern and a touch creative. If the painted wine bottles hung on trees around the property are anything to go by, their avant grade game is going strong. Unlike any other resorts I’ve visited in the hills, they’ve created a mini zip-lining and rope bridge next to the swings. They also have a games room that houses a Foozball table, Table Tennis and a bunch of board games. The pool at Aamari overlooks their tiny garden, it’s shrubs and flower beds, and onto the mountains beyond. The restaurant is damp and old, and a little depressing, but the rest of the property makeup for the lack lustre.

Evenings are perfect at the resort, with a private bonfire among the hills. You can plug in your speakers and get the groove going, or sit by and discuss ghost stories. It’s a peaceful resort and the people are friendly, the rooms are clean and they’ve got everything you need for a successful weekend in the hills.

Rooms:

The rooms are better than one would expect at a hill station hotel. They are clean and comfortable, with a view I can wake up to for the rest of my life. Drawing the curtains gives out an instant feel-good vibe, enforcing my plans of retiring in the hills one day, following in the footsteps of Good Ol’ Ruskin Bond.

The washrooms could be a little better with it’s plumbing attended to, but in all the resort was worth the money we paid for.

Food and service:

Oddly enough, the snacks and breakfast were quite mediocre, though the Indian dishes at dinner were done well. Expect slow service, specially in the rooms. It could be hours before your extra set of towels arrive. Most staff is lethargic, but one  young boy is a one-man show at Aamari. Veer belongs to the hills and works overtime around long weekends so enthusiastically and with a smile on his face. Throughout our time at the resort, we only saw him scurrying about trying to help out wherever possible. Request his services when you visit and he’ll do his best to ensure your stay is more than perfect. The staff who helped out when I went zip lining were equally sweet, as only those who live in the hills sometimes are.
