Amatra By The Ganges, Haridwar-Rishikesh: Hotel Review

Amatra by the Ganges: Room

With its lush green lawns spread generously along the banks of the Ganges, spacious and elegantly styled rooms, and all the amenities that take a trip from good to great, Amatra Hotels in Rishikesh has raised the standard for resorts in the Haridwar-Rishikesh belt. While faith tourism has dominated the tourist scene at Haridwar, friends and families have picked Rishikesh as a riverside camping weekend destination for years. The lack of quality stay options in this area have been a thorn in its side for a long time. Amatra by the Ganges, formerly known as Aalia by the Ganges, has used this lack of good resorts in a great location to its advantage, by offering the cleanliness, amenities and space one would expect from an indulgent resort. It’s one of the best resorts in the area, and is located between Haridwar and Rishikesh on a secluded spot- you guessed it- by the river bank.

Getting There & Around The Resort

Amatra by the Ganges is closer to Haridwar than it is to Rishikesh. In order to get to the hotel, you would need to drive through a narrow road for approximately 5 minutes, although it is easy to reach with minimal to no congestion. It’s a little away from the city, so private cars and cabs are necessary in order to get to and from the resort.

This secluded location is intentional, to give you an undisturbed, noise-free stay removed from the city life and into a life of bicycles around the resort, flip flops on the wet grass and quiet reading inside a cottage bar. And peaceful it is, for it’s next to the water and away from the highway, giving you the sounds of rain patter, crickets stridulating, frogs croaking, and leaves rustling in the wind. Welcome to joys of tossing pebbles into the river with your family, challenging your friends to badminton in the evening, and a host of other activities they offer on request.

The resort is a collection of large grey cottages that host individual rooms inside. Each cottage has two or three rooms that are not connected in any way. The cottages have one room on the ground floor that comes with a private garden, and another one on the top floor that comes with a large balcony and a beautiful view of the grounds. Given that it’s a relatively new property and with gardens maintained to an impeccable standard, the hotel looks like a movie set with crisp architecture and subtle colours set against a vast backdrop of green grass and blue sky.

The property is spacious and green, with trees lining walkways and empty corners, and paths made of stone tiles. It’s a mix of nature, glass and stone that is earthy yet contemporary. There is a little pool at the edge of the property for those who fancy a dip.

Rooms & Space

One of the reasons this resort is perfect for families and groups- true to its resort concept- is the spaciousness of the rooms. While most hotels are cramped after a third rollaway bed is added, this one does not. There’s an abundance of space, and these already-huge rooms comes with a dressing room and a decent-sized washroom. The additional garden/balcony feature further adds to the room, and the large glass doors can be rolled away, bringing the outdoors inside your room.

Families with 2 children can easily fit into a room with their parents and will have enough space to move and play around.

Food & Drinks

What’s a vacation without good food, right?! I stuck to the basics here at Amatra, and as recommended by their room service staff, picked from the Indian menu by and large. Barring a select few dishes, the food was satisfactory, with large servings and decent portion sizes. The buffet breakfast could use some work though!

Recommended: Chicken Tikka, Paneer Tikka, Tomato Soup, Chicken Biryani, Salads, Yellow Dal and Rice

I sat at the bar one evening and really enjoyed the Mojito I had ordered. I didn’t get around to trying other drinks because the Mojito far exceeded my expectations. The bar has a cocktail menu as well as a few options for each alcohol preference.

Staff & Hospitality

The staff at Amatra is helpful and friendly. Right from their gardener to the servers and their reception staff, every person I interacted with was pleasant and courteous. They were also happy to offer information about the property and its surroundings.

Activities

The gate that leads to the river bank

Since it’s at a distance from the main tourist hubs, the hotel has arranged games and activities at the resort for its customers. It’s one of those places best visited in a group, and with the intention of relaxing and giving into resort activities, including bicycling, table tennis, badminton, small aarti performed at the banks of the river at the hotel and a few other games to pick from.

Wheelchair Accessibility

Given the layout of the resort, wheelchairs can easily be manoeuvred around the resort. While the balcony rooms on the second floor are connected only via stairs, the rooms on the lower floor are easily reachable and have adequate space for a wheelchair. Breakfast is served at their restaurant on the first floor, accessibility for which is also limited to the stairs. I believe the front desk might be able to bring breakfast to the rooms or serve it at their ground-floor bar on request. The river cannot be accessed by wheelchair due to the rocks and stones that line its banks, but the lawn and pool area are large open spaces and easily allow wheelchairs to move around.
